Over the last few weeks there has been a lot of unrest on the selling site ‘Folksy’ – the admin team of the site decided to alter their selling guidelines, change what is and isn’t allowed as well as messing about with their views of what constitutes HANDMADE.
There are many loyal Folksy sellers who have been forced off of the site due to the new regulations and many other sellers have left in support of those who were given no option but to close their site.
Personally, I think the new regulations are ridiculous… Folksy’s new guidelines have decided that our candles do not fall into their handmade theory. We are very sad about this as Gordon spends many hours working with raw materials (eco soy wax, colouring, fragrances, etc) as well as often using recycled/repurposed containers for the range of candles we are proud to promote.
It seems that anything the Folksy powers-that-be deem to be ‘hand assembled’ will no longer be allowed on their site – surely all items are hand assembled? Whether you combined a load of pre-made materials to create your finished piece or shear your own animal, spin the yarn and then knit an item of clothing to your own design, the item is made by YOU, made by YOUR HANDS… in my eyes this makes everything which is hand assembled, also handmade. Am I wrong?
Like many other shop holders we have now closed both of our Folksy shops. We are very sad about this as we have not only spent a great deal of money on our Folksy stores (fees and commission) but also a great deal of time promoting our Folksy shop which in turn promotes the site as a whole. We feel as though we have been used to build the site and now when we’re not part of the ‘in crowd’ we are being forced out – doesn’t seem like a good way for them to conduct a business but it is their choice.
Cards And Candles For All Occasions and Badgers Woodcrafts will now be focussing on our own websites, promoting via Facebook and Twitter, advertising our own sites and helping other crafters who support the “Supporting Handmade – However It’s Made” movement. It is lovely to see so many crafters coming together at what is an upsetting time for many and I hope that this continues for a long time to come.
You can see a list of the crafters who are taking part in the Supporting Handmade – However It’s Made movement by visiting the website – please pop over and show your support.
Are you looking to purchase something special… a candle or timber gift? Perhaps a personalised greetings card or keepsake card? Or even looking into bespoke invitations for your special event? Look no further than our websites – we’d love to hear from you!!
