Woodburning With Style: Book Review

woodburning with style

Last year a fellow crafter and friend, Simon Easton, announced on the UK Crafts Forum that he was writing a book on the art of pyrography. Many members of the forum (ourselves included) ordered our copy of ‘Woodburning with Style’ as soon as we could… of course we want to support fellow crafters.

What is pyrography? Pyrography is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker. It is also known as pokerwork or wood burning. (description taken from Wikipedia

What did I expect? Having purchased pyrographed work from Si in the past and knowing how much work, detail and skill is involved, I thought this would be a book which would be placed on the shelf beside all of the other unread books. I didn’t think for a minute that I would understand the techniques and skills involved in pyrography.

So, my copy of Woodburning with Style: Pyrography Lessons and Projects with a Modern Flair arrived last week and I was instantly impressed, the book is superb quality and after a quick flick through I could see this was something I wanted to look into with interest, not just place on the book shelf… it is full of detailed explanations and photographs, advice and projects and from first glance seemed very reader friendly.

Over the weekend I sat down to begin reading through Woodburning with Style and I am ever so impressed, it is well written in an approachable manner with simple to understand advice and techniques. There is great detail given to explaining the pros and cons of the available equipment and how they can be used, the different materials which can be worked with and also the different things which should be avoided.

There are many project ideas for artists of all skill levels, from someone just starting out in the art of pyrography to experienced artists looking to expand their skills. Reading through this book I found myself thinking ‘I could try that’ even though I have always assumed that pyrography was way beyond my artistic abilities.

Simon Easton has written this book in such a way that everything is explained in detail and in an informal, approachable manner, while at the same time giving clear demonstrations and informative features on everything you may need to know if you were to try your hand at this craft.

Would I recommend Woodburning with Style: Pyrography Lessons and Projects with a Modern Flair? Definitely. This book is a must read for any artist or crafter, a great source of inspiration and ideas. Well written, superbly illustrated and most importantly easy to follow.
