Inspiration

Over the last few weeks the motivation and inspiration in the Cards & Candles For All Occasions household has been seriously lacking, we’ve had no creative spirit and new designs have been few and far between. Is it the weather? Is it the time of year? Who knows, but motivation has hit with a vengeance this morning!!

Due to current injury, I am on some great painkillers – they’re supposed to make me drowsy but they have the opposite effect… they wake me up!!! Last night I had about half an hours sleep then just couldn’t settle for ideas rushing round my head so I’ve been in the craft room since 6am and so far have made about 25 cards… mainly birthday and Christmas, but I’m hoping the creativity continues to flow and then our stock levels will soon be increasing if we can carry on like this.

At the moment we’re building up stock for our forthcoming craft fairs:

31st August 2009 – Garden Party at Smithills Hall, Bolton

6th September 2009 – Craft Fair @ Van Dyke Hotel, Clowne, Derbyshire

19th September 2009 – Craft Fair @ Ludlow College, Ludlow, Shropshire

1st November 2009 – Craft Fair @ Chelmorton Village Hall, Chelmorton, Derbyshire

29th November 2009 – Stockton Brook Craft Fair, Stoke on Trent, Staffs

And we’ve got a couple of Christmas orders in at the moment too… nice to see people are already getting organised and ordering, makes life so much simpler than the usual last minute rush :)

At the moment I’m in the middle of a crochet blanket for my Gran’s Christmas and have a few other pressy ideas which I need to look into and see what I can do with, so all going well our Christmas crafting will be well underway by the end of August… that’s the plan anyway!!

We’ve also set up a new Facebook page this week which is dedicated to our crafts… please feel free to join us, this page will be kept up to date with all of our new designs and special offers.

CLICK HERE for Facebook page

Well, I’d best go and get to the post office to send off a couple of parcels before coming back to the crafty grindstone and seeing what else I can get up to today :)

Special Delivery

This morning I was woken bright and early by our postman delivering a parcel to us… I knew there was only one thing that we were waiting for so I was very excited, though I managed to contain my excitement long enough to sort out the dogs, etc before closing myself in my craft room to rip open my parcel!!

Yep, it was my delivery of decorated egg shells from Ann at Ann’s Egg Craft” – as usual they are fantastic and I can’t wait to get to work using them. This time we have ordered fifteen but I’m pretty sure that we’ll be ordering more soon.

Tuesday 14th July 2009

Good evening all,

I’ve got quite a bit to chat about tonight, but I’d like to start with the biggest and most important thing which is a MASSIVE THANK YOU to Sue aka HappyBunny on the Crafts Forum who has sent me a piece of her work which arrived this morning.

Sue has recently started drawing on parchment paper and asked for ‘volunteers’ to send her photographs of children within their familes for her to draw to give her some practise and the quality of her work is fantastic!!

Sue has copied a photograph of my little cousins, Callum and Nicola… a photograph which was taken when they were visitting the UK in summer 2008, this is even more special as they live in New Zealand so we don’t get to see them very often.

Sue

Not only is the quality of Sue’s work fantastic, the finished drawing is simply stunning and the presentation is beautiful… Sue really does have a great talent and I wish her all the luck in the world with pursuing this.

More of Sue’s work can be seen “HERE”

Thank you so much Sue… you are a star and I cannot thank you enough!!!

Today has also seen the addition of another date in our crafty diary, this time a Garden Party which is being held at Smithills Hall in Bolton.

This event is taking place on Monday 31st August 2009 and will run from 12:00non until 5:00pm.

smithills hall

Gordon is already planning to go ghost hunting while we are there and we will definitely be taking our camera along to make the most of our visit to this beautiful place.

You can read about Smithills Hall “HERE”

Also today I have been busy sorting out some ideas and numbers for Christmas… we now know how many Christmas keepsake and greetings cards we need for our own use, so need to get those sorted out so that we can then make a start on the cards for our craft fairs, website and MISI shop as well as any other sales and orders.

I have made a start on bookmarks which will be taken along to craft fairs… just simple printed images and verses which I’ve laminated… not bad to sell at 50p each or something like that, a little something to appeal to the kiddies or as stocking fillers perhaps?

At the moment I am in the process of working on a range of bookmarks including: cats, dogs, fairies, friendship verses and assorted childrens interest. Hopefully there will be something there to appeal to most people.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the moment we are awaiting delivery of an egg shell order so as soon as that arrives from Ann at Ann’s Egg Craft then you will see the addition of lots of new keepsake cards designs.
We have recently sourced lots of new decoupage designs too, both Christmas designs and designs suitable for lots of other occasions so we’re going to be working on those too, so hopefully this next couple of weeks will see the addition of lots of new ideas and cards :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We are in the process of trying to source some new candle moulds in specific sizes to enable Gordon to work on some new ideas that he has, unfortunately we are waiting for our suppliers and potential suppliers to get back to us with regards to the availability of those we are looking for… I guess these things take time… but how much time are we expected to allow?

There will also be some new candle designs added soon… just as soon as Gordon gets the time, moulds and motivation that he needs.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We have decided in the last couple of years to send as many handmade/handcrafted Christmas gifts as possible but after browsing Ebay earlier today, I have decided to make one exception when I came across this listing *Calendar* – normally I wouldn’t buy calendars or such like as I prefer the personal touch but this time I couldn’t not buy one.
Julie and a group of friends have taken the decision to model for, have printed and sell a “Girls That Dare To Bare” calendar in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support, all proceeds from the calendar together with proceeds from other charity events which Julie is running will go directly to MacMillan.
macmillan logo
Both Gordon and I have personal experience of the wonderful work that the MacMillan Nurses do and anyone who can organise something as huge as this in support of them has our utmost respect. We support our local MacMillan nurses through handcrafted card donations for sale at their events.
To show your support to this wonderful team of nurses or see what MacMillan events are happening in your area then please visit their website, where you can also make donations online… “MacMillan Website”.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tonight’s last piece of news is that I have decided to join a “Stampers 6 Club” which is being organised by Stampin’ Up! demonstrator Jan Jackman, also known as Autumn Faerie on the Crafts Forum… Stampin’ Up’s products can be viewed on their website “Stampin’ Up!”.

The purpose of this club is to offer crafters the chance to spread the cost of purchasing some of the Stampin’ Up! range while benefitting from hostess offers. Many demonstrators offer this service though I would highly Jan, who can be contacted through her website.

The Stampers 6 club isn’t starting until the beginning of August so hopefully in the next few months I’ll be able to start trying out some new ideas and designs using these stamps, etc and then show you some new creations which will be quite different to my current designs… I can’t wait!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, I think that’s enough of my ramblings for one night so I’m off to write my ‘to do’ list for tomorrow and will speak to you all soon.
Thank you for taking the time to read.
Birches Head Carnival
Saturday 11th July 2009 saw us at the Birches Head Carnival being held in the Bridge Centre, Stoke on Trent… we didn’t hold out much hope for this event as we hadn’t seen much in the way of advertising and the Bridge Centre hadn’t bothered to list the event on their website. Not a good start in our eyes!!
We got there to set up and were escorted to the ‘craft fair’ section which appeared to be at the back of the centre (away from the main events), ony to discover that in addition to ourselves with our greetings cards, keepsake cards and candles there were another THREE card stalls, luckily one of these didn’t turn up. So, the craft fair consisted of:
1 x Cards & Candles Stall (Us)
1 x Card Only Stall
1 x Cards & Notebooks Stall
1 x Teddies & Jewellery Stall
1 x Jewellery Stall
1 x Photography Stall
1 x Body Shop (!) Stall
1 x CD Stall (Cross Rhythms)
And one ‘free for all’ stall which would have been better suited to the carboot!! As well as Usborne books in a sideroom.
We were set up and ready to go, well over an hour before the event actually started… no idea why they wanted everything set up so early!!
Us
Once the day got underway there were quite a few people wandering about but not many were actually bothering to ‘look’ at the craft stalls. We did make a few sales and covered our costs on the day.
We also got to see the lovely Claire of ‘Pawprints of Staffordshire’ and got to admire some of her beautiful teddies… I’m in love!! :)
Claire
We were very disappointed with this event and out of all the things which were advertised as being there, we saw very little evidence.
We saw no community or charity stalls, there was no sign of the fire engine or donkey rides. The Kingsley Bird of Prey Centre was there, though they were badly situated next to the main stage!! The mobile police station was there, with lots of PCSO’s and Police Officers wandering round the venue. And for the kiddies there was face painting, balloons, bouncy castles and other inflatables in the ‘kiddies corner’ though the burger va, ice cream and coffee shop all seemed to be missing – we heard several people complaining throughout the day that there was no where to get a drink!!!
Would we do this event again? Probably not!!
Sunday’s Spectacular Crafts
It’s Sunday morning and I’ve been browsing the internet and admiring some truly spectacular crafts… works of art which must have taken so much time and patience and can only be admired by myself. Crafts which I would not know where to begin with but I can see the beauty and work involved in them.
First up, we have this stunning “Paper Craft Castle On The Ocean” – a piece which was created over four years. You can read more about it and see more photographs “HERE”.
Next we have some gorgeous fairy sculptures by Rita Dolan of OOAK Fairy Fae – each of these beautiful fairies are sculpted froom polymer clay and each one is unique. More of Rita’s work can be viewed “HERE”.
Here we have a gorgeous mosaiced gecko by Diane at Moonbeam Mosaics – he had been created using textured stained glass so that he shimmers in the light. You can see (and buy) some of Diane’s beautiful mosaic work at her Misi shop “HERE”.
Next we have two beautiful keepsake cards which have been created by Tina at Forever Memories For You… very intricate work which must take a great deal of time and patience. More of Tina’s work can be seen on her website “HERE”.
Next, we have two wonderful examples of recycling… baskets hand weaved using recycled materials and created by Julia. The first basket was made using cardboard and packaging tape, while the second basket was created from empty cartons… more of Julia’s work can be seen on her website “HERE”.
Lastly, we have a selection of reborn dolls and monkey’s which are all OOAK’s and handcrafted by Judy Dickinson of Judy’s Reborn Nursery… they are all stunning!! I have two of Judy’s reborn dolls and can honestly say that the photographs really do not do them justice, the work which goes into these is second to none… fantastic work. More of Judy’s work can be seen at her website “HERE”.
