Hogmanay – Wednesday 31st December 2008

Good morning all, here we are at the end of another year and what a rollercoaster year 2008 has been. Lots of ups and downs, lots of goods and bads but we have made it to the end of the year and here we are ready to start 2009 which will hopefully be better for everyone.

This year we have saw a lot of illness with myself and hubby – hubby had to have surgery which hasn’t helped and is now awaiting a referral to a Professor at a different hospital, and I have spent this year having various tests and procedures and am now waiting to be admitted for surgery. We have also had two bereavements of close family members and a close friend. As previously mentioned my sons memorial was destroyed just before Christmas too… add to this financial difficulties and problems within our family and it has been a very tough year.

Although on a plus note, we had family visitting from New Zealand in July who it was great to see. This year also saw the first of our ‘proper’ craft fairs at which we did reasonably well, and we are aklso now stocking our cards and candles in a couple of shops across the country.

Our hopes and plans for 2009 are pretty simple really… we’re aiming to get our cards and candles into another retail outlet (discussions have already started) and to attend a few more craft fairs throughout the year, as well as hopefully generating some sales via our website and our Misi shop.

On a personal level I want to get into a healthier routine… healthier eating, drink more water and less coffee/pepsi!! And hopefully start getting a bit more exercise. Ideally I’d like to lose some weight along the way but I definitely want to get fitter so here’s hoping that I can manage to stick to it. As some of you may be aware, part of my depression arises in forms of self harm, and although I’ve managed to keep this under control for most of the last six months or so, there have been a few occasions where I have lapsed, and I’d like to make it to the end of 2009 and be able to hold my head high in the knowledge that I have managed to beat it – fingers crossed. I’m also starting a condition management programme to try to get my depression symptoms, etc under control – that’s due to start in the next few weeks so we’ll see how that goes.

In the last couple of days I’ve got my son’s new memorial plaque ordered from Si at Wood Tattoos and we’ve made a decision on the design that we want – I’m hugely relieved that the idea for this has come together so quickly and we can now look towards building a fitting memorial for my baby boy. Monday 23rd February 2009 also brings with it the second anniversary of the passing of my mum and I’m hoping to get some sort of memorial in place for mum too, though I’m not very sure what – I’ll have to look into that one.

Well, today is going to be spent giving the house it’s final clean and sort out of 2008 in preparation for the new year celebrations, although I think that this evening will just be Gord and I at home with Gord’s dad coming to visit tomorrow for a New Years Day dinner. We might get a surprise and have some visitors to celebrate the New Year but as far as I’m aware then we’ve no plans.

Anyway, here is wishing everyone a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2009!!

We did it!!

As some of you may know, hubby and I have been looking into building a dolls house for our friends little girls for some time now.

Over the last few months things have been pretty hectic between craft fairs, card orders, candle orders, health problems/hospital appointments, family problems and then trying to get things done for Christmas – which included building a pc for father in law, a couple of watercolour paintings for family members and other bits and pieces.

Anyway, on Christmas Eve things finally came together and we were able to breathe a sigh of relief… the girls dolls house was built!! We didn’t have time to decorate it, but we are looking to use this as a project that we can work on at a later date with the girls.

Dolls House - Outside

Dolls House - Inside

Hubby got the plans for the house from my dad although in the end we ended up having to buy the furniture and ‘family’ as we just didn’t have the time to make anything else.

What did the girls say? They were absolutely delighted… initially they both just stood and stared with the most gorgeous smiles on their faces and then they set about arranging everything just how they wanted it. Of course, being Christmas morning and having so many new toys, games, etc around nothing was holding their attention for any length of time, but we got a text this evening to tell us they have been playing with the house on and off all day.

To be able to do this for these two adorable little girls really means a lot to us and we’re just glad that we were able to get it done in time for Christmas :D

Of course, all of this has got me thinking about ‘renovating’ my dolls house that my dad built for me about twenty (plus!!) years ago, so I’ve asked dad to bring it down from his house tomorrow when he’s visitting from Scotland so that will be something else to keep me busy lol.

Baileys!!

450ml whisky (roughly half a pint) Don’t bother with the good stuff – supermarket brand works just as well and costs about half as much.
1 400g can evaporated milk
1 400g can condensed milk
1 tsp instant coffee (liquid coffee like “Camp” coffee works best as granules are hard to dissolve in cold liquids.
½ tsp vanilla extract (NOT essence!)

Mix them all together and you’ll have about a litre of alcoholic beverage.

It keeps about 2 months in the fridge . . . . . . if its not been drunk!

Craft Fair at Delapre Abbey

What a weekend at Delapre Abbey, Northampton!!

Saturday wasn’t great as we were in a marquee with torrential rain and high winds – the roof was leaking and at some points we thought the marquee was going to take off!! Despite the weather there were still a decent number of people around on Saturday and we had a few sales.

We went out for a meal on Saturday night, watched the X-Factor in the hotel and then collapsed into bed – it’s surprising how tiring standing around in the cold is!! We stayed in the Premier Travel Inn which was really nice… very clean, tidy and friendly with a great HOT power shower, just the thing to wake me up and get me prepared for another day on the stall when I woke up on Sunday morning!!

Sunday was a far better day… we had a dry day which wasn’t as cold and the sun did try to make several appearances throughout the day. There were far more people around on Sunday which resulted in lots of sales, lots of business cards being handed out and contacts made so we’re pretty hopeful that we may get future orders through some of those. At the end of the craft fair on Sunday there was a fab carol concert which everyone enjoyed and definitely helped us to stay in the festive spirit!

Today we’re going to spend the day sorting out what stock we have left, what needs boxing and putting away for next Christmas, what we can use for this Christmas, and what Christmas cards we need to send today before the Christmas post gets any worse. After all that I need to get all the housework done and get clothes, etc sorted for Gord’s aunts funeral on Wednesday and get all of the washing done so it’s looking like it’s going to be a busy day.

4th December 2008

Good morning, good morning, good morning!!

Here we are three weeks from Christmas, hardly any Christmas shopping done BUT we’ve got all of our orders finished, our Christmas cards written and our Airmail parcels ready to post either today or tomorrow.

We have got a pamper evening tomorrow for which Gord has plenty of candles ready but I’ve got a shortage of Christmas cards… I’ve used them all for ourselves as we need to send about 150 cards!!  So I’m going to be busy tonight making more cards as we’ve got a two day fair in Northampton next weekend as well – 13th and 14th December 2008 at Delapre Abbey.

The first of the Christmas gifts that I ordered from a Crafts Forum member arrived on Tuesday from Pauline@weddingtreasures who has just finished a commision piece for me.  I’d asked her to make one of her snowman toppers for me to incorporate the colours which we had at our wedding in 2004, our wedding theme was ivory and a deep red with the men wearing the black watch tartan.  Pauline gave Mr Snowman a black watch tartan hat and scarf and made the presents in the red and ivory colours that I had requested, the personalised this with a message for hubby.  Mr Snowman is absolutely stunning and as I couldn’t bear the thought of him being left in a box, hubby got him early so he now has pride of place with the decorations!!  Thank you soooo much Pauline!!

Between now and Christmas we’ve got quite a lot to do as we’ve got more Christmas decorations to sort out, a few ’special’ cards, most probably bookatrix, to make to give with gifts the last weekend before Christmas, a dolls house to build and decorate, we need to replenish our stock and also fit in our Christmas shopping at some point… we’re hoping to pop over to Nottingham in the next few days as I want to go to Hobbycraft and The Range as hubby is getting me some crafty bits for Christmas.  As for hubby’s Christmas then I’ve no idea what to get him… I’ve got a few little stocking fillers sorted but as for his main present I’ve got no idea.

Once we get Christmas sorted then we’ve got four birthdays within the first two weeks of January so we need to get those sorted as well… a busy time of year as in amongst all of that it’s my birthday on 29th December!!  Maybe by Easter I’ll have time to sit down and relax, then again, we never know sa we’ve already got nine craft fairs booked up for 2009 so need to make sure we’ve got plenty of stock for those!!

Well, for now I need to go and get ready to go to the post office and go Christmas shopping and see what I can get done cos it’s going to be a busy busy busy few days!!

What does Christmas mean to you?

The new year is fast approaching and with it are many new opportunities, opening doors and hopefully happy times for all of us.

Over the last few days I have been doing a lot of thinking about the months gone by and things that are coming up and a friends recently asked me “what does Christmas mean to me?”  Well, the answer to that is that Christmas is a time when I can reflect on the year gone by, the events and happy times as well as the not so good times which we have got through as a family and look forward to the forthcoming year and everything it brings with it.  Christmas time is also very important to me as I get the chance to catch up with friends and family who I rarely see throughout the year since moving 250 miles away a few years ago, as well as just relaxing in the knowledge that everyone has a few days off work and has nowhere they ‘need’ to be.  I value the festive period to share with friends and family the chatting round the fire, the family meals, the catching up and the look of joy in the children’s faces when they receive the gifts that they truly appreciate.  Christmas is about friends and family, caring and sharing, enjoy valuable times together and remembering loved ones who have passed on but who’s spirits are still with us.

What does Christmas mean to everyone else?
